[texts]What Is a Good Linear Finite Element? - Jonathan
Why are elements with tiny angles harmless for interpolation, but deadly for stiffness matrix conditioning? Why are long, thin elements with angles near 180o terrible in isotropic cases but perfectly acceptable, if they're aligned properly, for anisotropic PDEs whose solutions have anisotropic curvature? Why do elements that are too long and thin sometimes offer unexpectedly accurate PDE solutions? Why can interpolation error, discretization error, and stiffness matrix conditioning sometimes hav...

[texts]Design of Pipelines Against Ice Scour: Effects of Seabed Geology
In recent years, several computational models were published for the analysis of pipelines subjected to ice scour. With one exception, most of these models assumed uniform seabed soil properties. This paper studies the effects of different seabed soil stratigraphies on the ice scour process. Influence of various stiffer and softer soil sequences on the pipeline stresses are analyzed. Effects of reworking or remolding of soils by recurrent scours are studied...

We present a series of simulations to demonstrate that high-fidelity velocity-delay maps of the emission-line regions in active galactic nuclei can be obtained from time-resolved spectrophotometric data sets like those that will arise from the proposed Kronos satellite. While previous reverberation-mapping experiments have established the size scale R of the broad emission-line regions from the mean time delay tau = R/c between the line and continuum variations and have provided strong evidence ...

[texts]CONVERGENCE OF ADAPTIVE MIXED FINITE ELEMENT METHOD FOR CONVECTION-DIFFUSION-REACTION EQUATIONS
We prove the convergence of an adaptive mixed finite element method (AMFEM) for (nonsymmetric) convection-diffusion-reaction equations. The convergence result holds from the cases where convection or reaction is not present to convection-or reaction-dominated problems. A novel technique of analysis is developed without any quasi orthogonality for stress and displacement variables, and without marking the oscillation dependent on discrete solutions and data...

Heat-transport is important for geothermal exploration. The presence offractures can have a pronounced effect on groundwater and heat transfer. The inclusion offractures into geothermal reservoir models on different scales is often still a difficult task. Acomparison of approaches for flow in fractures has been carried out. A very simpleapproach is to simulate fractures with thin but highly conductive layers, for instance byapplying the Cubic-Law...

[texts]Two Versions of Bitonic Sorting Algorithms on the Connection Machine - Tung, Yu-Wen
Communication is a major cost item for many algorithms on today's parallel computers. Therefore, reducing the communication requirements in an algorithm often results in an improvement to the original algorithm. In this paper, we show two versions of bitonic sorting algorithms on the Connection Machine obtained this way. The first is a version of bitonic sort modified from a standard implementation for hypercube machines...

Automation in the aviation domain has been increasing for the past two decades. Pilot reaction to automation varies from highly favorable to highly critical depending on both the pilot's background and how effectively the automation is implemented. We describe a user-centered approach for automation that considers the pilot's tasks and his needs related to accomplishing those tasks. Further, we augment rather than replace how the pilot currently fulfills his goals, relying on redundant displays ...

This document is a pictorial atlas of the Earth's radiance emitted in the 6 to 7 micro-m water vapor band. At these wavelengths, the infrared brightness temperature corresponds to the layer-average temperature of the top few millimeters of water vapor in the atmosphere. At low altitudes, bright regions are dry slots in the upper troposphere. The satellite observations were obtained from NOAA's cloud and angle corrected measurements made by a series of polar orbiting TOVS (TIROS Operational Verti...

The first stage generates alternative schedule sequences by interchanging pairs of schedule elements. The set of alternative sequences can represent nodes of a decision tree; each node is reached via decision to interchange job elements...

The problem is addressed to find a 1-1 mapping of the vertices of a binary tree onto those of a target binary tree such that the son of a node on the first binary tree is mapped onto a descendent of the image of that node in the second binary tree. There are two natural measures of the cost of this mapping, namely the dilation cost, i.e., the maximum distance in the target binary tree between the images of vertices that are adjacent in the original tree...

[texts]The effect of aspect ratio and fluid flow on crystal growth - Barber, Patrick G
Supersaturated solutions were conditioned at different aspect ratios before crystal growth. The conditioned solutions were poured out into a dish to initiate crystal nucleation and growth. The rate of growth was measured microscopically and found to depend upon the aspect ratio. Secondly, the number and size of crystals formed was found to depend upon the aspect ratio. The data support the above conclusion, but do not prove it.

A fast, long-range, long-endurance rotorcraft, notably the tilt-rotor configuration, will improve rotorcraft economics...
